Scientific and technical information activities in Russia: emerging metadata search engines, super-networks and GRIDs

Russian Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Science and Education together with the main telecom companies are rapidly increasing bandwidth, connectivity, and content of the national super-network for science, technology and education. The government is pushing to develop metadata indexes of the state-financed information resources. International cooperation mainly within European Data Grid and Russian-US NaukaNet/GLORIAD projects have opened high-speed perspectives for global information exchange with possible link of the 10Gbit ring around the Globe in the coming 2 years. The Russian Acad. Sci. recently has adopted a 5-year program to develop GRID infrastructure for high-energy physics, bio-informatics and Earth sciences.
