Materials theories and materials data accumulated during the long period of
research and engineering lay a foundation of designing new materials with improved
functions. Although the importance of cooperation between materials databases
and simulation systems for the purpose of materials design has been well recognized,
most of the database systems and simulation systems today are still operated
alone due to technical and other reasons. Besides, systemized knowledge base
of materials theories which explain the physical and chemical meaning of the
data and lay the theoretical base of the simulation has not been reported yet.
In this presentation, we reported a composite materials design platform which
integrates materials knowledge base, materials database and materials property
simulation system as one. The knowledge base contains definitions and explanations
of the basic concepts, laws and equations related to composite materials and
their physical properties calculation. A Web based composite design interface
helps the user to select component materials and to design the structure of
a composite. The simulation system calculates the property such as specific
heat, effective thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the designed
composite. The database contains materials thermophysical properties data retrieved from multiple NIMS
(National Institute for Materials Science) materials databases, and is used
during the procedure of composite design to help the user to find appropriate
materials and to provide property data needed in calculation.
