Collaborative web sites - The Codata France approach

Christel Porte (porte@univ-mlv.fr) and Hélène Bestougeff (hbest@magic.fr)
University of Marne-la-Vallée, France

As presented in its web site, "CODATA is a resource that provides scientists and engineers with access to international data activities for increased awareness, direct cooperation and new knowledge."

One way to organize cooperation between scientists of different countries is for each CODATA National Committee to develop its proper web site which presents on going activities and information valuable for the whole CODATA community. But this is not enough to support cooperation. What is needed is some open system for real collaborative work . Today existing tools such as "content management systems (CMS)" are available to facilitate the creation and the management of dynamic web content.

The poster will present the French approach to such a collaborative web site where on one hand the user can access to information pertaining to scientific activities of "Codata France" organized around six themes :

  • Information systems and interoperability.
  • Quality and metrology, data and decisions.
  • Health: information and data quality.
  • Industrial production systems and knowledge engineering.
  • Geoinformatics and environment.
  • Technological watch and innovation.

Each theme is treated trough six chapters: Presentation, Objectives, Associated Experts, Proposed Services, Professional Sectors, Institutional Support, References and is under the responsibility of a scientist who takes care of the updating.. The References chapter is organized as a "who is doing what" in a given scientific field.

On the other hand, using the open source SPIP- CMS, authorized authors can provide new content entered in plain text (with some mark up to indicate other resources such as pictures) and which is automatically structured in a coherent style by the system. Open forums can also be installed to discuss this new content. In brief the webmaster is replaced by a community of authors who can dynamically collaborate.

A content presentation by different scientists in charge of a given theme and a technical demonstration of this website will be demonstrated at the conference.
