The explosive growth of Web sites and Usenet news demands effective filtering
solutions. Search engines facilitate the access to digital data through WEB servers. A number of Internet search
engines provide classified search directories. The aim of the present paper
is to suggest a method of classification of website gateways made by the librarians
and information science specialists. Apart from search engines, which claim
to cover all areas of knowledge, there exist “gateway” sites produced by specialists
in particular fields. Librarians and information specialists were the first
to compile this kind of site. They attempt to structure Web content by providing
validated links to the most interesting or useful resources in a given
field.
