BIOGRAPHY Joan E. Sieber Joan Sieber has just completed a term as Director of the National Science
Foundation program: Societal Dimensions of Engineering, Science and Technology.
She is Professor Emerita of Psychology at California State University,
Hayward, is the recipient of that institution's Outstanding Professor
Award, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Her
major research emphasis is the behavior of scientists in relation to value
issues. Her most recent interests include the dynamics of whistle-blowing,
research in cyberspace, use of the internet to teach research ethics in
science and technology, and discovering how to design effective research
ethics committees in private industry where the research is social and
behavioral in nature and creativity and knowledge are the major industrial
products. She has chaired and served on research ethics committees for
the State of California, a hospital, a university, and three private high
tech corporations. She frequently presents workshops on ethical problem
solving at meetings of professional organizations, and serves on national
boards concerned with scientific ethics and protection of human research
subjects. Her recent books include Research Ethics: A Psychological Approach
(with B. Stanley & G. Melton), Planning Ethically Responsible Research,
The Ethics of Social Research, Sharing Social Research Data: Advantages
and Challenges, and Social Research on Children & Adolescents (with
