Bob will discuss the need for visions in the innovation process leading to new information visualization techniques, and the need to gain a much improved understanding of how visualization tools can be designed to be a good match with human perceptual and cognitive abilities. The importance of notation in the effective application and understanding of visualization tools will be suggested.
