Controlling an interactive visualization typically involves navigating among and manipulating displayed objects. This can be extremely tedious and time-consuming, especially in the case of 3D visualization. A complementary approach to such low-level direct manipulation uses a knowledge-based system to select and perform these operations in response to high-level user commands. We describe a testbed for exploring these ideas in the context of computer network management, using the IMPROVISE visual presentation design system being developed by Michelle Zhou.
