Data Information and Visualization

Approved by the CODATA 23rd General Assembly in Montréal 2002
Renewal approved by the CODATA General Assembly, Berlin 2004

Note: This Task Group was dissolved in 2006.

The technical areas of this task group, visualization and data, information, and knowledge management, have gone in the past years through an enormous expansion in research and development and in their use. These technical areas include advances in data mining, heterogeneous systems, and visual presentations enabling the linking of data, information, and knowledge.

The Task Group mission is to enable CODATA take advantage of state-of-the-art developments in the areas visualization and information and knowledge management.

This is to be done through:

  • Being a liaison between academia, industry and government and CODATA
  • Organizing meetings, workshops, and sessions on the subject area and publishing information
  • Organize tutorials for CODATA on the subject areas
  • Create and manage a Web page. A resource of information about visualization and data & information management

This task group will continue to bring the state of the art developments in these important technological areas (visualization, data, information, & knowledge management, human information interaction) to CODATA members (through workshops, tutorials and publications). The task group will assess the applicability of these technologies to CODATA and ICSU mission and activities. It will bring to CODATA standards activities done in other organizations (e.g., IEEE Task Force on Human Centered Information Systems). The activities of the Task Group will also make CODATA activities known to other technological organizations (i.e., IEEE Computer Society).

Summary of Recent Activities

Prague CODATA Workshop on Information Visualization
The Task Group is organizing the Prague CODATA Workshop on Information Visualization. It took place on March 29 - March 31, 2004 at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Prague, The Czech Republic. This is one of the first significant events linking the Czech Republic, a new national member of CODATA, with the CODATA community.

Task Group Web page: http://homepage.mac.com/schmooz/DIVisTG.htm. This web page is continuously updated and improved. It contains information about the area of interest to the Task Group and on events and resources (tutorials, conferences, links, books, and other publications).

Tutorials: The tutorial on information visualization given at the Montreal conference will be available on the Web in a short time. 2 tutorials are planned for the 19th CODATA International Conference (see below)

The 19th CODATA International Conference - The Information Society: New Horizons for Science, 7-10 November 2004, in Berlin, Germany.

  • The Task Group is actively involved in the organization of the program of this meeting. We plan, among other things, a Keynote and sessions on the TG topics.
  • Tutorials on information visualization and on data & information issues are planned for this meeting.

ICSU Matters

  • Beginning to examine the areas of visualization and data & information management at ICSU.
  • Beginning planning for a report on the examination of the current activities within ICSU family on visualization and data & information management including
    • A proposal for a strategic framework for ICSU to take in the next 10-15 years
    • Recommendations for promoting collaboration and co-ordination within the ICSU family, and recommendations for potential partnerships with outside organizations.

Current and Upcoming Activities

  • Proceedings of the Paris 2002 meeting- the proceedings of the meeting will be available on the Web in a short time
  • ICSU Matters
    • Initial proposal for a strategic framework for ICSU to take the areas of visualization and data & information management for the next 10-15 years.
    • Initial report on the examination of the current activities within ICSU family on visualization and data & information management including recommendations for promoting collaboration and co-ordination within the ICSU family, and recommendations for potential partnerships with outside organizations.
