The activities in the field of scientific data collection and distribution in Poland for the last years were disseminated among many scientific institutions and were financially supported from different sources. Under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Informatics Developments (established in 2004 instead of the former State Committee for Scientific Research) in the last years further progress in the development of academic computer network ( POL34) based on wide-band inter-city data transmission lines, connected also to the EC network TEN155 (Quantum), was continued. Municipal area networks ( MAN) in several main academic centres ( Cracow, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Poznan, etc.) have been also developed. A substantial role in offering open access to scientific databases is played by the Interdisciplinary Centre of Modelling ( ICM) in Warsaw. As a result, most of governmental and private academic schools, universities as well as of the scientific institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences and of other organisations has the possibility to reach remote access to open data banks connected to Internet and located anywhere in the country or in the world. However, this, formally possible, access to data banks and development of proper data banks is still in practice limited by a shortage of financial funds. This situation since the years 2000-2002 has not been improved.

2. Scientific data banks

The activity of factographical scientific databases existing in Poland concerning:

Multi-spectroscopic data.

New generation of chemical reactions.

Thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of chemical substances.

Industrial sciences and technology.

Alloys phase-diagrams.

Foundry industry.

Machine industry.

Hydrotechnological engineering

Paleobotanical species (algae, ferns, decorative plants, etc.) existing in Poland.

Forest researches (forest fires, measurements of the wood annual increments, satellite images of forests, forest seed plantations and seed stands, etc.),.

Natural geological resources.

Geological researches in the Polish part of Baltic Sea.

Topographical, bathymetrical, hydrological and meteorological data concerning eastern Polish coast.

Meteorological data.

Medical imaging (in selected areas of oncology, psychiatry, gastroenterology, thermography, etc.)

and several other disciplines was continued. In those domains an international cooperation was also supported. On the other hand, no new wide-access scientific databases have been created.

3. Publishing activities

Transferring of the idea of scientific data collection, processing and distribution within the community of scientific research workers was one of basic tasks of the Polish National Committee for CODATA. In the journal "Nauka" ("Science") edited by the Polish Academy of Sciences it was published by J.L. Kulikowski an article "About the activities of the PN Committee for CODATA" ("Nauka", No 2, 2003, pp. 181-191) addressed to a wide community of Polish scientific workers, informing them about the aims and ways of action of CODATA.

In the beginning of 2004, in connection with the CODATA Executive Board meeting planned in Warsaw, a special Report on the aims of CODATA and on the activities of the PN Committee for CODATA, has been elaborated and delivered to the Authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

In 2004 a book on "Intelligent Computer Methods for Science, Technology and Economics" (Z. Kierzkowski, ed.) containing the papers submitted to a conference on the same topics, held in Poznan in 2002 under the authority of CODATA, has been published.

Information about the Polish National Committee for CODATA, its general tasks, national members and planned activities is available (in Polish version) on www.pg.gda.pl~codata.

4. Organizational information

In 2003 the members of the PN Committee for CODATA for the next, 2003-2006 period have been nominated by the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

As the officers of the PN Committee there have been elected: and nominated:

Prof. D.Sc. Juliusz Kulikowski, Inst. of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw – chairman, Prof. D.Sc. Zdzisław Hippe, Rzeszów, Higher School of Informatics and Management – vice-chairman,

Prof. D.Sc. Antoni Nowakowski, Gdańsk University of Technology – vice-chairman,

Dr Janusz Sach, Polish Academy of Sciences – secretary.

Full list of the National Committee members has been sent to the CODATA Secretariat in Paris.

The meetings of the PN Committee for CODATA were organized 2 - 3 times per year. They were devoted to transferring information about the CODATA Conference in Montreal (2002), to some general aspects of scientific data collection and distribution as well as to current organizational problems.

In the beginning of 2004 the PN Committee for CODATA, acting by concert with the Authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences, helped in the CODATA Executive Board meeting organization in Warsaw. The meeting took place in April 2004, and it also gave us an opportunity to a common discussion with the Executive Board members on actual problems of scientific data collection and distribution as well as on actual problems of PN Committee for CODATA activity in Poland.

PN Committee for CODATA was in permanent contact with the CODATA Executive Board and Secretariat in other subjects of CODATA activity. The financial membership duties were also transferred to CODATA in the due time.

An official delegate of the PN Committee for CODATA to the PN Committee for ICSU was nominated and attended its meetings.

5. Tasks for the PN Committee for CODATA in the next two years

The activities should be focused on: a/ maintaining and further development of scientific data bases in the country; b/ cooperation with CODATA in all areas of its activity and with selected CODATA

TG and/or WG;

c/ propagation of Polish specialists' participation in international, bilateral and/or national research projects concerning modern information technologies connected with scientific data acquisition, storage, processing distribution;

d/ active participation of the Polish National Committee for CODATA members in national conferences on modern (intelligent) methods in scientific data acquisition and processing.
